Verge Gardens in Moreton Bay
City of Moreton Bay has launched a new Verge Gardens for Biodiversity Pack to promote the idea of residents planting native verge gardens.
City of Moreton Bay Council have had a verge garden policy for several years. It hasn’t changed but they have taken away the option of artificial turf. (Yay!)
Now they are encouraging residents to focus on planting local native plants for biodiversity and provide a haven for bees, lizards, birds, and other wildlife with their new Information Pack.
When enough residents do that, those gardens will become connecting corridors between larger areas of parks, creeks, and bushland. They’ll also be a lot cooler and more interesting to walk along.
You’ll find links to the verge garden policy and the information pack on their website.
Verge Visits
The Council has set up three demonstration gardens so, instead of our usual verge garden visits, we’re planning to go and check them out. Details of each garden and a plant list are in the information pack.
109 Sorrento Street, Margate
18 George Street, Deception Bay
33 Brendale Street, Brendale
They are on the verge in front of parks so there is no resident, but it would be good if we can have some people there with local knowledge.
If you live near any of these and would like to take part, please let us know in the comments below or by reply email to this newsletter. We’ll have some experienced members there to talk through the guidelines and plants, and write up the story afterwards. See previous stories here.
The dates will be set at our planning meeting on Sunday.
Planning Meetings
We are shifting our meetings on the third Sunday of the month from the Library to Zoom. This makes it more accessible for participants over a wider area. These are the meetings where we review and plan. If you would like to be more involved in the running of the group, or want to know more, please contact us by reply email for the link.
Everyone is welcome to our public events.
