Tree Planting at Wishart 18 Nov 2023
Great event with many conversations and new connections made.
This morning's tree planting event event at Wishart where we had a stall to promote planting native verge gardens to support council street trees - and follow the council policy.
Thanks to BCC for putting on these events and inviting us along. These are really easy events for us because they supply the stall, table and chairs and do all the set up and take down.
Thanks to Tony, David, and Jenny for coming along. Lots of conversations and new connections made.
It will be interesting to get the results from Pollinator Link Group's experiment on which colour the solitary bees prefer in the bee houses.
Fortunately it was a bit cooler this morning but still a good reminder of why we need to get more trees in our parks and streets to help reduce urban heat as well as increase biodiversity and habitat.
The Good News
Some good conversations re Wendon Way Park and the platypus habitat.
The Bad News
Also Tony spotted another median strip with fake grass on the way there. We drove back that way along Mount Gravatt Capalaba Rd.
There’s a lot more further down here. Looking at street view it looks like it was grass, then concrete and now fake grass. The bit between that used to be low growing shrubs and grass looks like it’s been poisoned. Preparation for more fake grass perhaps? From an environmental and urban heat point of view, how could they justify the move to fake grass. This is a TMR road not BCC. (use this site to find out who owns a road)
Given they replaced plants with fake grass at the Gympie Rd & Stafford Rd intersection, this seems to be a growing trend with TMR.
BCC don’t allow fake grass on verge gardens and as far as I know don’t use it on median strips. Moreton Bay City Council does.
