City of Moreton Bay have introduced a new Verge Gardens for Biodiversity Information Pack. See story here. This Monday we are visiting one of their demonstration gardens.

We will discuss the special aspects of the verge, the plants chosen to increase biodiversity, and the differences between council policies. Brisbane and Moreton Bay policies are quite different and you must ensure that you follow the right one.

We were pleased to be in the shade of the fig trees.

The Geckoes team was a great success. How often does one get to stroke a perentie? It was so good to see the little ones overcoming their tentativeness to be prepared to stroke the different lizards and the python. Fancy the pet macaws turning up!
So many of the children were drawn (ha,ha,) to the colouring in tarp while one or both parents were able to peruse quietly. I’m sure that would have been appreciated.
There were connections made and many exchanges of information that will have impacts going forward so a real success all round.

The ACF Brisbane Northside and Australian Conservation Foundation sponsored the wildlife show. It was a major drawcard and fit with our aims.

Many thanks go to the group’s BCC Creek Catchment Officer, Wesley DeMuth, for organising the stall with free native plants from Brisbane City Council for residents to plant in their gardens.

High Tech and Low Tech

The tech stall had a display of a BirdWeather PUC device that captures and identifies bird vocalisations and the Frog ID app that we use to identify frogs.

Jen from Hooray for Nature ran nature journaling for all ages, and a colouring-in area for children meant there was something for everyone. For the colouring in, we used activity sheets about platypuses from Wildlife Queensland Educational Resources about platypuses and sheets about frogs from FrogID for schools. We’ve identified Tusked frogs (Adelotus brevis) in the creek at Wendon Way using the Frog ID app.

Thank you to Richard (behind the camera) who ran the ACF Brisbane Northside stall with information about the Australian Conservation Foundation, coming events, and the group’s verge garden project.

PlatypusWatch Project Officer Dr Tamielle Brunt will talk about this amazing animal as well as the research happening in Brisbane. As you walk through known platypus habitat, Tamielle will talk about what keeps them happy in the waterways, local conservation efforts and how you can get involved with the ACF Platy-Project monitoring program.

New Research on Platypuses

This research shows why what we do with the Wendon Way Bushcare Group, and what we do as residents in the surrounding area is so important.

"To mitigate freshwater degradation and localised extinction risk of platypus, policy recommendations include riparian buffer protection (> 30 m) and water-sensitive urban design."

Many thanks to Richard, Jenny, and Brendon for helping on the stall and the Banyo District Community Group for organising the event. As well as talking with many community members, we reconnected with local residents from the Banyo District Verge Gardeners.

We also had a good chat with Leanne Linard MP, local Member for Nudgee and Queensland Shadow Minister for Environment, Science, Innovation and Climate Change and Shadow Minister for Youth.

Those native tubestock plants Richard and Jenny are holding in the photo were from the stall of a major sponsor of the event.

Mitchell and his colleagues from the Alex Fraser Group had lots of information about how they recycle different materials for reuse in building roads and other infrastructure - a key part of sustainability and a circular economy.

Alex Fraser Group were giving away free native tubestock plants:

• Coronidium elatum (Tall Everlasting Daisy)

• Synostemon albiflorus (Snowbush)

• Pavetta australiensis (Butterfly Bush)

• Dianella caerulea (Blue Flax-Lily, Paroo Lilly, Blueberry Lilly)

• Alpinia caerulea (Native Ginger)

These will increase the biodiversity in many gardens in the surrounding suburbs and help our native bees and other pollinators. We were very pleased with our selections.

This month, we will continue to work with Regen Brisbane and The Shady Lanes Project to explore how we all might come together to play our part in creating a more sustainable future in our region.

Normal Waste Services

The first thing that happened when Cyclone Alfred was looming is our bin collection was cancelled. It was no drama for me who rarely has more than a small bag in the bottom of a big wheelie bin, moved into the garage so it doesn't blow away.

However, social media was full of panic from those who fill the bin every week. For them, cancellation means smelly, rotting rubbish with nowhere to go. BCC arranged special pickups on Sunday to get as many of the Thursday and Friday people who missed out as possible. Some were lucky, some missed out. Floods will determine who gets their pickups this week.

Waste from Cyclone Damage

As the days progress we get more scenes of damage.

Structural damage from the wind means that homes and other buildings will need repairs - and damaged materials sent to waste.

Rain and flood damage is even worse with the sodden contents of houses, carpets, curtains, furniture and more.

And then there is the food waste. Perishable food in our fridges and freezers lost due to power cuts will fill our bins. Even worse, when the local supermarket loses power, vast quantities of food need to be thrown out.

Even the non-perishables that we all bought to get us through tend to be highly packaged. Bottled water has become a necessity.

Where Do We Go From Here?

So what do we do now?

Do we rebuild, replace our damaged items, and resume life as before when the fine weather returns?

Or are there lessons we can learn? Adaptations we can make to reduce the impact and waste generated by increasing extreme weather events?

Can the ideas from Circular Economy and Doughnut Economics be applied to find models for a society that is more resilient to extreme weather events?

Is waste an isolated issue or is it a symptom of systemic issues?

What might we do as individuals, in our work, in our groups and organisations?

How might that affect the impact and outcomes of the next big weather event?

We were pleased with the diversity of experience and knowledge in the room. You can read a report on this workshop here. We intend to do a similar workshop each month on a topic related to climate change and sustainability. These are fast-paced and fairly demanding workshops. The next one is on Sunday 16th March.

Verge Garden Visits

Our verge garden visits are more informal and social. We visit a verge garden and discuss the different plants, the gardener’s reason for planting, how this helps increase shade, biodiversity and habitat in our suburbs, and working with council policies. They are for one hour and are only on the verge, not inside the garden.

In March, we will visit a verge garden at Banyo. Some of you will remember working bees on this verge during the Banyo Project. Details and RSVP here.

Our Verge Garden Nature Project is part of the Australian Conservation Foundation’s Save Our Big Backyard campaign to raise community awareness and knowledge about the importance of protecting biodiversity and native habitat in our local community.

Bushcare

Several of our members attend the working bees at Wendon Way Bushcare each month. They are usually on the second Sunday of the month from 7:30am but in March will be a week later - on the 16th.

The team at ACF Community Brisbane Northside were pleased to donate the cart and hose to the Bushcare group in time for last month’s working bee. (photo above)

Visitors are welcome. If you want to work, you need to wear protective clothing and shoes. There is covered seating and a playground nearby.

The simplicity of the message connected with people from many walks of life. Heatwaves affect so many other concerns, yet the increasing urban heat remains one of the intractable problems we face where there is plenty of talk, years of serious analysis and reports, and occasional, unconnected, partial solutions for mitigation and adaption.

In this blog post, Brisbane’s green future: Climate action strategies aligned with sustainable development goals, Ali Cheshmehzangi talks about the need for “collaborations with local communities, businesses, and academic institutions”, “neighbourhood-based projects” and “collaboration [that] promotes a sustainable culture throughout the city.”

This is spot on, but how do we make it happen at the scale and speed required?

During February, we will work with Regen Brisbane and The Shady Lanes Project to explore how we all might come together to do these collaborations, at scale and speed, to mitigate or adapt to urban heat. There will be at least one in-person workshop, and others activities online.

Climate Action is a task for all of us.  And it concerns all of us.  No-one can for it alone - but we can do it together.  More Queenslanders than ever before are speaking up for climate action. There are many proactive ways to work with Councils and Goverments to send a clear message to about the need to take urgent climate action.  We need all parties to step up their ambition - stronger emission reduction targets and more action!

Our monthly community conversations are a learning space to share experiences, learn from and connect with others who are exploring sustainability and what it means for them. Remember, this is a "come as you are" movement. All are welcome, and every voice matters.

What is placemaking anyway?

Placemaking is promoted as a solution to everything - building community, sustainability, regenerating local economies, change-making etc. But what does placemaking mean?

We’ll start with three perspectives from a panel with very different backgrounds:

- : will talk about placemaking within the context of architecture and professional placemaking from her experience designing stadiums, airports, buildings, etc.

- : will talk about placemaking within a transport context and the effects of transport systems on communities and their places

- : will talk about placemaking within a natural context and how “bumping” places are the starting point for action on social and environmental sustainability

Poor home energy efficiency is a reality of life for most Australians.

Dwellings are expensive to heat and cool – and even then, are often still uncomfortable to live in.

These inefficient homes don’t just waste the occupants’ money. They waste energy – and the emissions that come with producing it.

In our changing climate, the unpleasant, potentially dangerous conditions inside Australian homes will become more frequent unless action is taken.

Until recently, any systematic approach to improving Australia’s dwellings fell at the first hurdle: knowing what types of homes needed to be upgraded.

Recent work from Climateworks Centre’s Renovation Pathways project addresses this gap in knowledge about Australia’s housing stock.

We now know the most common types of homes, where they are and what they’re made of.

With this information, we know how to get them climate-ready.
